What We Did

The Center for Sexual Expression and Education was no no longer able to continue once Covid hit, and we finally had to shut down after 17 years. This is now an archival site of the various projects of CenterSEE.

The Sexual Heritage Preservation Project is still active. It has digitally preserved and enhanced tens of thousands of books, cultural artifacts and works of art. Its mission continues.

Jeff Booth continues to publish, and a list of upcoming book titles can be accessed from the Upcoming Books menu above.

The blog entries below by founder Jeff Booth have been selected to offer a representation of some of our activities over the years.

Sexual Support

I feel quite fortunate to be able to move through so many wonderful sexual alternative communities. I am not personally bi, but my wife Kris is (she has even marched in the Long Beach Gay Pride Parade), and we occasionally host bi parties and we do attend various bi events. We have a long association with various nudist groups (some sexual and most not- well unless you look beneath the surface.) We have long been very active in the swinger community and host a number of parties. We have been to polyamory events, BDSM dungeon parties, parties with porn stars, foot fetish events, and to sex clubs and resorts.

While all of this contributes to our knowledge of human sexuality and makes us better sex educators, we also do it because of the people. They tend to be interesting and fun to be around, even beyond just the sex part (and we really do like the sex part.) To get to the point where you can successfully and comfortably navigate through the various sexual alternative communities requires you to develop strong social skills and to have worked through some of your own issues. You have to have thought about your own sexuality and what it is that you actually desire. These environments encourage and sort of require a certain amount of self-actualization.

Being a part of alternative sexuality groups is also a positive in that you discover that there are others like you. If you worry that you might be too kinky, you will quickly discover people much kinkier than you. You will also learn a lot from others who share similar sexual interests, and you might even discover sexual interests you did not even know you had.
There are many groups that have social events where you can just meet and mingle. These often take place in public venues. We are given so many negative messages about sexuality, I think it is very important to be in environments that are positively affirming and where you can just be yourself.

If you live far from a city you may be out of luck, but even most modest size cities have groups that support various interests. Let Google be your guide.

Swinging and Diversity

My wife and I were at a swing party the other night, but we did not play. That happens sometimes. In this case, it was a smaller party, and we spent most of the time talking to really interesting people that we had not gotten a chance to talk much with in the past.

It got me to thinking about swing parties and the type of people who attend them. The great thing about it is that you develop a very diverse social circle with people from all different backgrounds.

Here in Los Angeles we have one of the most diverse populations in the country, with people from all over the world. There is the opportunity to get to know people with wildly different backgrounds and life experiences.

For someone like me who loves diversity and associating with people who are different from me, L.A. is the perfect place to be. I have had the opportunity to be intimate with women from Japan, China, Russia, India, Iran, the Czech Republic, Mexico, even Canada (some of the most polite sex you will ever have.) I have learned more about their cultures and in many cases spent time with their families and experienced their traditions and the food they grew up with. I have had sex with women of every ethnicity, including Native American. I have been greatly enriched by this intimate exposure to people who are not just like me. I think if we had more of that, there would be less racism and hate, something that now seems to be consuming our country.

L.A. is also a creative town. Among the people who often attend this fairly frequent swing party is a composer with his own orchestra, a successful playwright with productions all over the world, a number of actors, a movie director (mainstream- not porn), a television editor, an actual rocket scientist, and many other people with really interesting careers. These are people I would never have associated with otherwise. Through swinging I have gotten to know an Emmy winning producer, radio and television personalities, writers, sex experts, and so many others. We have friends in the industry from our years working in mainstream show business, but swinging has introduced us to many new people in the industry. Here in L.A. at least, swinging attracts some of the most fascinating people. That is one of the many many reasons I love L.A. and the people who live here.

A Warm and Kinky December

It is December in Southern California. The other night I was sitting in a Jacuzzi at with an actress, and a fetish model. Both were gorgeous and like me, quite naked. It was a surprisingly warm and pleasant evening where you could run around naked outside and still be reasonably comfortable. I could not help but take a moment to appreciate life.

This was a BDSM party with a number of people in the industry- fetish models, performers, and professional doms. Our party host is very well liked in the community, and his parties attract a large number of lifestyle practitioners.

The pool was heated, and there was a tall suspension system over the pool that people could hang from. One extremely athletic woman in a very short skirt and no underwear climbed up the rope, and my wife and I were in the water directly below with what turned out to be the best seat in the house. There are worse places to be on a Saturday night.

The submissive of our party host is actually quite a talented artist. She had a bunch of new erotic art framed up on the walls along with the many other very nice works of erotic art throughout the house. Our host is friends with a number of well known artists and has some very unique pieces.

Of course there was an impressive dungeon. Underneath a king sized bed was a cage, which was actually a great place to people watch. There was a coffin you could have sex in. There was a very good selection of whipping and spanking implements available for use. There were spanking benches, and and other BDSM furniture.

Beyond having a well equipped dungeon, our host also has many well-equipped friends. This really was an exceptionally attractive crowd. Whether hanging in the pool naked with them or watching various scenes, there was much to stimulate the senses. There were even a few people attending from different parts of the country. It was a great opportunity to learn about the scene where they were from, and of course, the conversations often lead to learning about a lot of different things people are into and what their desires are.

I personally am not a big time dom. I have some skills, but many of the people here were masters in both senses of the term. There was much to be learned from them, and Kris and I are constantly learning and making the hard sacrifice of going out to all these different sex related events to make ourselves better teachers.  You’re welcome.

Monsters

My wife and I are Halloween obsessed, and we make it into a big deal at CenterSEE and hold a big annual Halloween sex party. We recently attended the annual Son of Monsterpalooza convention looking for ideas. You can read more more about it on Sex in Review in the Monsterous Sex article.

One of our theme rooms is the Tacky Tiki Terror room. Think Tiki bar in hell. I was looking for art that was sexy, Tiki themed, and horror themed. An impossible mission, you might think. I found three decorative items for the room- two pieces of art and an erotic Tiki themed horror comic.

Another themed room is Annabelle’s Room, inspired by the original Annabelle film and the just released sequel. It just so happened that they had the doll from the movie, and I snapped a picture of it. I turned it into what looks like a painting, and it will hang in Annabelle’s room.

There were some pictures that were interesting but not all that sexy, so I thought I would include them here.

One of the most amazing costumes was a perfect Chewbacca. He roared and was carrying the ripped off head of C3PO. He could make the head talk and make various sounds just by pressing different fingers together.

Another outfit made by a 17 year old was also impressive-

This life sized statue had a bleeding heart fountain inside and cool lighting.

Ronald McDonald’s severed head seems to be inappropriately staring at that woman.

Speaking of head, I can’t imagine anyone would want head from this guy-

I can’t wait for Halloween. At the same time, I am so glad it is still a month away as we are only half way done with the decorating.

Behind the Scenes of the Golden Age of Cinema Show

While I try and keep up with what is going on, I was completely unaware of the The Golden Age of Adult Cinema show. It is a series of three different shows over the course of three weekends, and we do a review of the first night on Sex in Review.

A good friend who is a bit of a mainstream celebrity clued me in, as he was friends with the producer, although this is not the type of show he normally goes to. While I left acting, he went on to have a really amazing career.

We all went together, but whenever we go anywhere with him, he is recognized and graciously poses for pictures. He is often approached by very sexy women, and he is a bit of a flirt. He is also very gregarious, so it seems like wherever we go with him, tons of people know him.

This event was the first time we have gone anywhere where I felt like I knew more people, and wound up talking to more beautiful women than he did. I was wearing my journalist hat (not literally, as the hats are really dorky looking, although I did see a journalist at the AEE who was wearing the classic 1930s look ironically and really pulled it off). Being a journalist lets you talk to everyone, and while my friend got stuck in a corner for much of the time after the show talking to a young actress seeking career advice, Kris and I hit the after-party and flirted with porn stars. We also got a chance to talk with a number of very interesting people.

I was happy to run into a number of people that I knew. For me, it was nice having been away from writing about the adult industry scene for many years to not be completely forgotten. There were even a couple of women there whose radio shows I was on years ago.

We met one woman who was there to help a friend. She told us a very amusing and outrageous story about her days running a dungeon in New York in the 90s. I wish I had permission to repeat it.

The BTS blog is a place where I get to add things that got left out of the review or article on Sex in Review. In this case, I completely forgot to mention Rhonda Jo Petty, who had a table with a number of interesting items for sale. Her first release was Disco Lady in 1978, but she is probably best remembered as a bustier Farrah Fawcett look-alike, and there was an arguable similarity. She is in the AVN Hall of Fame and the XRCO (X-Rated Critics Association) Hall of Fame. I took a shot of her in a great pose, and was most disappointed to discover that it was out of focus.

If you are in L.A. and like the stars and films from the Golden Age of Adult Cinema, check out our review and try and see the show.

Getting Ready for Halloween

I worked as a professional magician and comedian in my younger days, and then spent a number of years working in the entertainment industry, as did my wife Kris. We still have lots of friends in entertainment, and one of the areas that merged between magic and show business was knowing a number of people who do special effects and makeup for movies and television. That also ties in with our love of Halloween.

You’ll read about just how extensively we love Halloween and the major sex themed Halloween party we throw every year on the Sex in Review site towards the end of September when we do our Halloween Preview. We’ll have full coverage of last year’s party with tons of ideas you can do your self (and a free nude female ghost video you can download with instructions on how to use it). We’ll also have articles on sexy costumes, and Halloween appropriate sex toys.

Looking for ideas for Halloween, we attended the Son of Monsterpalooza convention over the weekend. This is a show for fans of monsters and horror. There were not nearly as many sexy costumes as there were at Wondercon, but a topless woman did come in second for the costume contest.

She looks naked in the pic but she is clothed behind the giant check, and she is wearing pasties. The winner was quite amazing as well as horrifying though. Conjoined elderly twins, although underneath all the latex it was just a couple of kids.

Afterwards it was off to a private party. One of the things I love about L.A. is its diversity and all the amazingly interesting people you encounter. It is certainly one of the best places to meet people from the world of entertainment. At this party there were actors, directors, make-up people and creature designers. I moved around from cluster to cluster trying to catch as much conversation as I could and wishing I could be everywhere at once.

Don Post Jr. was there. He is an extremely pleasant gentleman, especially considering all the horror he has brought us. His father was known as the Godfather of Halloween, having founded a company in 1938 that produced the best Halloween masks for decades. Don Post Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps. Did you know that the mask that the Michael Myers character wore in the original Halloween film was a modified Don Post mask of William Shatner?

Also in attendance was Ron Chaney. His grandfather Lon Chaney, and father, Lon Chaney Jr., were pretty famous in the horror business. We have run into Ron a couple of other times in the past year. He is also extremely pleasant and full of interesting stories. In fact, monster people in general are some of the nicest people you will encounter. We first ran into him when we wound up sitting next to him at a screening of a restored presentation of Phantom of the Opera.

The story behind Phantom of the Opera is very interesting. Shot in 1924, the test showing was not favorably reviewed. It was then reshot with a different director to be more comedic. The test audience booed it off the screen. It was up to famed director and editor Lois Weber to cut together the various footage into what has become a classic.

You can learn more about Lois Weber by visiting the Erotic University virtual campus and going to the RTV department. That is where the Lois Weber Theater is located, and you can read about the woman who is considered one of the most important directors of the silent era, and certainly the most versatile as a hugely successful actor, writer, director, and producer. You can also watch a screening of one of her films in which she both starred and directed, where she appears nude throughout. It was pretty racy for 1915.

Appearing on Playboy Radio

by Jeff Booth

For three years, the Center for Sexual Expression and Education presented classes in downtown Los Angeles using the Erotic University name. Now Erotic University exists as a virtual online campus, but there was the real thing at one time. This archive contains remembrances from those very fun times.

I had to do a lot of promotion for the Erotic University events. Here is a recounting of my experience going on Playboy Radio:

This evening, I was a guest on Playboy Radio’s Nightcalls with Ginger Lynn and Christy Canyon on the Sirius Satellite Network. It was a fun segment, but definitely one of the more unusual radio interviews I have done.

I walk into the studio and Christy is already topless. I’ve done a lot of radio interviews, and the last thing you’d want to see during most of them is one of the idiot adolescent shock jocks topless, so this was a pleasant change. I missed the lead-in, but apparently it is wet and wild night, which has something to do with Ginger pissing into a diaper. I missed the setup for that, and I am not completely sure that I was all that unhappy about missing the setup for that. The first thing they asked me was if I would use some latex polisher and rub it into Christy’s latex corset while she was wearing it.

Now this is all fine and well, but makes it much more difficult to do an interview and discuss the wonders of Erotic University classes. I talked about the uniqueness of our live classes and the amazing movie studio venue we have to do them in. At one point Ginger asked me to rub Christy’s breasts, which I did, but I think I might have lost the thread of the conversation for a moment.

The subject got onto our massage classes, and Ginger asked me if I would massage Christy. I pointed out that I was not the instructor for the class, and Christy says, “Oh, so are you dissing me?” “Not at all,” I replied, “I just didn’t want to oversell myself.”

She came over and I quickly realized that massaging two of her most accessible areas, her ass and her breasts, would make it impossible for me to do a good job with both the interview and with her respective parts. And, frankly, my ego came into play. Here was an opportunity to impress a porn star with my skills, and there is just not a lot you can do with breast and ass work when someone is standing and while you are trying to do an effective interview.

I decided to go with my strengths. “What usually works as a good place to get started is with the feet. I get a lot of practice with this, since my wife can have an orgasm from a foot massage.” So, for pretty much the rest of the interview, I worked on Christy’s feet. Clearly, I could not give it my full attention, but I think I did okay. Afterwards she said that in a quieter less distracting environment she probably could come from one of my foot massages. True or not, it was a nice little stroke of the ego which I appreciated.

I have no idea where they came up with our class list, as it was a couple of years old, so I had to kind of steer around that.  I talked a lot about our live classes and of course, what it is like to be an incredibly lucky fellow who gets to travel around having sex adventures with his wife and call it research.

Of course, I also tried to be funny. At one point, I mentioned how easy it was to get distracted with all of the things going on, so Ginger suggested instead of using my head I should talk from my dick. “I would,” I replied, “But it has a very high squeaky voice, and its just embarrassing.”

I had a good time, but usually I am more in control when doing an interview. In this case, though, they were clearly in charge and steering the bus, and my job was to enjoy the ride. An afternoon involving naked women is always a plus in my book (although it is much more difficult to answer questions as they were dressing and undressing).

I found both of them very gracious hosts. I’d met Ginger Lynn before when I had the opportunity to visit the set where she was directing her very first adult video. She did a great job, making everyone feel welcome and keeping everything running like clockwork. I very much enjoyed meeting Christy, who was very warm and friendly. All in all, it was one of my more pleasant radio interviews.

Our First Halloween at EU

For three years, the Center for Sexual Expression and Education presented classes in downtown Los Angeles using the Erotic University name. Now Erotic University exists as a virtual online campus, but there was the real thing at one time. This archive contains remembrances from those very fun times.

My wife and I typically make a big deal out of Halloween every year. You can read about this year’s Halloween event on our Sex in Review site. The article is The EU Halloween Party.

In our early twenties, when Kris and I were both working in entertainment, we always worked on Halloween, and not always together. After we stopped performing, we decided to always keep Halloween in our hearts and do it right.  Once we got into swinging and started having parties, our annual Halloween party became legendary.

This particular year, though, we had just moved into a new home, and realized there was no way we could get everything out of boxes plus get all of the decorations up in time. So, we decided to make Halloween an EU event instead. We would start out with a class on sexual alternatives for couples, then move on to a big sexy couples only Halloween party. Here is what I wrote about that event:

We host our EU classes in a huge 30,000 square foot studio. The owners of the venue also provided the space for the Halloween event. They have a huge prop department, and they went all out in decorating for the event, creating a walkway through a cemetery with animated ghouls that popped up.

The party itself took place in a fully functioning set of a nightclub. It is not a real nightclub- it is never open to the public, but it has everything a nightclub has- bars, serving areas, tables, dance floor, lighting effects. It can be dressed in many different ways and has been used in movies as a restaurant, bar, etc. For this evening it was dressed as a strip club, with several stripper poles.

There were certainly lots of sexy costumes at the party. Since there was basically no restrictions on just how sexy, some of them showed off a lot of skin, and others showed off pretty much everything. And, of course, quite a few women could not resist the dance poles (including a couple of obvious professional dancers), and they managed to wind up without anything on at all.

Party at Erotic University

For three years, the Center for Sexual Expression and Education presented classes in downtown Los Angeles using the Erotic University name. Now Erotic University exists as a virtual online campus, but there was the real thing at one time. This archive contains remembrances from those very fun times.

To celebrate the announcement of our virtual campus version of Erotic University, we held a very fun evening at our downtown Los Angeles campus. The virtual campus, of course, never got off the ground at the time because of the onset of my neurological problems that would sideline me for the next several years and delay the official opening of the Erotic University Virtual Campus by more years than I could have imagined. At least it is finally here, and I also have great memories of what was a slightly premature celebration:

It started out with one of our most popular classes: Swinging 101. This is an opportunity for couples to learn from experts about how to get started in swinging, how to meet people, how to find clubs and parties, and all the basics to get started.

After that, it was on to Monte Carlo Night, where some 125 couples joined us for a fun evening of dancing and games. Having our campus in an actual movie and television studio (which has done so much to support us) works out great. They have an entire functional large night club set where people could gather, dance, and socialize.

The owners of the studio also went way above and beyond the call of duty. When we said we wanted to have an area for a topless blackjack dealer, and a strip poker tournament, they said great. Then they actually built two complete adjoining rooms decorated like a casino- one for poker and one for blackjack. These were complete with poker and blackjack tables, chips and other gambling equipment, plush seating, tapestries on the walls- everything. Fully furnished and decorated to look like upscale gambling rooms. It’s pretty cool when you have huge prop rooms you can pull whatever you need from and a crew that can build whatever you need.

As it turns out, though, our blackjack dealer never showed up! Amazingly, one of the women in our Swinging 101 class mentioned that she had been a professional dealer, and that yes, she was willing to get into the spirit of things and help out. She was great! She knew how to deal, kept things fun and moving, gave out lots of prizes, and had lots of people coming to her table to gamble and/or enjoy looking at her breasts. A big thank you from us, and a big box of goodies will be on the way in the mail as an additional thank you (we know she likes sex toys so we will send her enough to keep her busy for awhile). She really saved out butts!

Another big thank you to Ken (our poker dealer), and his wife, for making our Strip Poker Tournament such a success. This was sponsored by the World Strip Poker Federation (wspg.org), an international organization for competitive strip poker play that we made up when we were developing our virtual campus.

At the time I did want to develop the World Strip Poker Federation into something real, albeit humorously exaggerated in its serious intent. There was a web site and everything.  That went by the wayside with the double whammy of my illness and our losing our venue.

Ken is a great friend, and one of the managers at the facility is also a good friend, and as it turns out, the two of them had been friends from several years back and had lost touch. Kris went and introduced them not knowing they already knew each other, and they were very happy to be able to reconnect. It was a great evening for all concerned.

Lots of couples participated in the Strip Poker tournament. I was busy coordinating things, so I was only able to poke my head in a few times, but there were always happy, semi-clothed people in there having a great time. Ken has trouped the boards as a professional comedian, so he knew how to keep them laughing as he kept them stripping.

The lovely co-founder of EU (and my wife) Kris was in charge of the Dice Game, which was in still another room dedicated to just this game. It was a big enough room for lots of people to gather. The Dice Game is very simple. Normally, you roll the dice with about 50/50 odds of winning. Since we had so many prizes (over $3500 worth, not including the big prize for the Strip Poker winners), Kris decided to let everyone skip the first step and become a winner- if they accepted the challenge. Basically, you roll the giant dice, and then in order to win the prize you must do the challenge that matches the number you rolled. The challenges were:

2. Win just for your good looks
3. Fake an orgasm
4. Flash the room
5. Get completely naked
6. Demonstrate a sexual skill of your choice
7. Get completely naked
8. Demonstrate your kissing skills
9. Flash the room
10. Demonstrate your seduction skills
11. Do a sexy dance
12. Win just for your good looks

Of course, they can always choose not to accept the challenge and not win the prize. The key to games like this is to give people the option of not doing anything, and to leave what they have to do open enough so that they can go as far as they feel comfortable. Almost everyone accepted their challenge and walked off with a prize.

It was very sexy to watch. Since this was a couples event, they always had the opportunity to do some of the challenges with their partner, but since Kris really likes women and we had some real beauties there that night, she was thrilled that so many of them asked if they could do 6, 8 and 10 with her. She loves kissing girls.

It was a great, sexy event, but very tiring for us. We were busy packing all day getting ready to move to our lovely new home (we move next week), so it is a crazy busy weekend. We got home by 2 am, but we also have an afternoon swing party to attend on Sunday. We may have packed a little too much into the weekend- but we don’t want to be all work and no play. Okay, maybe a lot of our work is play. Life is good.

My Adventures with Censorship

by Jeff Booth

I have experienced censorship first hand on a number of occasions. It has almost always been ridiculous, and random, and involved petty power plays by those who believe that if sex is involved, playing by the rules, integrity, courtesy, and decency are not necessary. Some of them did impact CenterSEE negatively.

One of my first exposures to direct censorship was over an art gallery showing by several friends who did erotic art.  The erotic art show even got a write-up in Penthouse magazine. That was great publicity for my artist friends, especially since the show was closed after the first day. This was in Los Angeles in a regular art gallery. The show was for adults only. It was shut down not by local authorities, but by the owner of the building the gallery was in. He told them he would evict the gallery if they did not shut down the show.

I also experienced direct art censorship several years ago when I was involved working with the Lifestyles Convention. One of the important parts of that convention was the erotic art show, which was always well done with a  professional curator. Kris and I were friends with the curator and his wife, so we learned first hand about what he went through. This time it was not local authorities, but the state ABC, Alcohol Beverage Control. They seemed to have decided that since they had failed at keeping alcohol away from minors, they would instead focus on the other authority the law gave them- protecting the morality of California adult citizens. They told the hotel where the art show was being held to shut down the art show or lose their liquor license for the entire hotel. No, alcohol was not allowed in the gallery. The ABC claimed control over the entire hotel, even in places where alcohol was not served. You can read about the debacle in the article by Steve Mason in our Archives.

I was the editor for the Adult Business section of About.com. It was a popular section that discussed and reviewed adult toys, movies, and other commercial related aspects of the adult industry. Unfortunately, About.com was purchased by a much more conservative company that wanted to drive away the adult content, despite the fact that it produced large revenues and was very popular. This included sections on BDSM, sex education, and other channels of content by other editors. The first move was, “to protect the children”, to remove us from their search engines and their channel listings. That dropped traffic by about 80 percent. Since all of us working on About.com were freelancers who had built up our own channels, and we got paid based upon the number of page views and advertising, suddenly, a number of people who were making a decent living saw it disappear almost overnight. The next decision was that since the adult channels were now underperforming, a problem they caused by removing us from search and channel listings in the first place, that we would no longer be paid the premium but at a lower rate per page view because of our “lack of success”. This pretty much wiped out all of the profitability from editing a channel, which took a lot of work to make a success. I and all of the other adult content editors resigned, which was what they wanted all along.

One of the most ridiculous forms of censorship was when I was doing radio interviews to promote an event I was producing for CenterSEE celebrating orgasm. It included free classes related to orgasm, educational displays, a stage show where we set the world’s record for most touch free simultaneous orgasms using hypnosis, and lots of other orgasm related activities of an educational but not hands on. Anything hands on, of course,  would have gotten the event closed down. The producer of one the shows, a rather popular one actually, told me that I could not use the word orgasm. If I did, I would be bleeped. This was right after the Janet Jackson Superbowl episode and all the radio stations were a bit paranoid. A friend who did a popular educational sex segment on a major Los Angeles radio show had to quit doing that segment because of all of the fear and pressure from not knowing what the FCC would go after.

Of course, censorship goes beyond being told what to say-it also includes being told what you can’t do. That cost us the physical building where we held CenterSEE events and classes, and forced us out onto the Internet. You can read about that in the L.A. City Shuts Down CenterSEE Home article.

None of my personal experiences with censorship have been particularly positive.
